Your Questions Answered: The Honest SmartStorage.au Guide to Getting Storage Right First Time
By SmartStorage.au | July 2026 | Updated regularly as new questions come in
We get questions every day. Some come through the chat on the website. Some arrive by email. Some are the same question asked in ten slightly different ways by ten different customers who've never met each other but are all stuck on the same thing.
After more than a year of running SmartStorage.au, we've got a pretty good feel for what people genuinely want to know - before they buy, while they're deciding, and sometimes after the product has arrived. This guide is our attempt to answer all of it in one place, honestly and without the spin.
We've also woven in the new products that have just landed in our range - not as a hard sell, but because some of the questions we're getting right now are about exactly these products, and the context helps.
If you've got a question that isn't answered here - ask us directly. The chat goes to us, not a bot.

|
1. Why Don't You Have a Physical Store? (And Why We Think That's Actually a Good Thing)
This one comes up more than you'd expect, and we think it's worth a proper answer rather than a brush-off.
The honest truth: we chose to be online-only from day one, and it wasn't a compromise - it was a deliberate decision that directly benefits our customers. Here's the logic.
Physical stores are expensive - and you pay for them
A retail shopfront in a Sydney or Melbourne suburb costs anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 per month in rent, before you factor in staff, fit-out, utilities and stock on display. That overhead gets built into the price of every product you buy. Online-only businesses don't carry those costs - which means we can price more competitively, offer free shipping, and still run a sustainable business.
You can't put a 3-metre shed in a showroom anyway
Think about what we sell. A 3×5.38m workshop shed. A 775L outdoor storage box. A 6-pack shelving system that covers an entire garage wall. These aren't products you'd experience differently in a physical store - they'd be photo renders on a screen in-store, just as they are online. The meaningful research for these products happens through dimensions, specifications, reviews and questions - all of which are better online.
Our support is genuinely better this way
When you call or chat with SmartStorage.au, you get us - the family who built this business, who know every product in the range, and who have a genuine stake in you making the right decision. A retail store would mean casual staff reading from the same product descriptions you could read yourself. What we offer instead is real knowledge and honest advice. We think that's worth more.
|
💬 What customers say about this: The feedback we get most consistently isn't about missing a physical store - it's about how good the support experience is when something goes wrong, or when someone needs to talk through their options. That's the thing we've doubled down on. You can always reach us directly. |
2. What Does a Base Frame Do - and Do I Actually Need One?
This is one of the questions we get asked most often, and it's a genuinely important one because the answer affects how your shed performs long-term.
The short version
A base frame is a steel perimeter frame that the shed panels bolt onto, elevating the shed structure off the ground surface and creating a rigid, square base for assembly. Some of our sheds include it; for SpanBilt sheds you can purchase it separately. Whether you need one depends on what you're building on and how permanent you want the installation to be.
What a base frame actually does
• Keeps the shed panels off the ground, which dramatically reduces base corrosion - particularly important in areas with any moisture or pooling water.
• Creates a level, square starting point for assembly, which means panels line up properly and doors track correctly. Without a level base, everything downstream in the assembly is fighting the ground.
• Adds structural rigidity to the overall shed, particularly important for larger buildings in exposed positions.
• Makes the shed genuinely permanent - it's anchored to the frame, which is anchored to the foundation, which gives you confidence in high-wind situations.
When to consider a base frame
• If your surface is gravel, pavers, or compacted earth rather than a concrete slab
• If you're in a wind-exposed position (coastal, elevated, or open backyard)
• If you want the shed to be a permanent installation rather than something you might relocate
When you might manage without one
• If you have a perfectly level, properly poured concrete slab that you can anchor directly to
• For smaller compact sheds in sheltered positions where the masonry anchor kit (included with SpanBilt sheds) can do the anchoring job directly
|
💡 If you're ordering a SpanBilt shed and you're not sure whether to add the base frame - ask us before ordering. We'll give you an honest assessment based on your site and shed size. It's one of those decisions that's much easier to get right before assembly than to regret after. |
3. How to Pair Products Together - Getting More From What You Buy
One of the questions that's come up increasingly as our range has grown is how different products work together. This makes sense - a shed and a set of garage shelving and an outdoor storage box aren't three separate purchases. They're a system. And when you think about them that way, the whole becomes considerably more than the sum of its parts.
Here are the combinations we recommend most often, with honest reasons for why each pairing works.
|
Anchor product |
Pair it with |
Why it works |
|
Any garden shed |
1.8m steel garage shelving ($89.95) |
Instantly doubles usable space — floor for bulky items, shelves for everything else |
|
Slimline SpanBilt F36-S |
Wall-mounted drill holder rack ($74.95) |
Maximise vertical space in a narrow shed - tools hang, floor stays clear |
|
UBild 260 workshop |
3-pack or 6-pack shelving + tool chest |
Transforms 8.8m² from empty building to fully fitted workshop in one go |
|
Any shed (no base frame) |
Outdoor storage box 775L ($259.95) |
Box handles weather-exposed overflow; shed stays dry and organised inside |
|
Garage shelving 3-pack |
7-drawer tool chest + drill holder wall rack |
Three-zone garage: shelving wall, mobile work station, wall tool access |
|
Outdoor storage box |
Box = quick-grab outdoor items; shed = long-term, secure, weatherproof storage |
|
|
SpanBilt YardStore G98 |
All-steel 2-pack shelving ($239.95) |
Premium shed deserves premium shelving - all-steel boards for heavy workshop loads |
The principle behind all of these pairings
Every pairing follows the same logic: your outdoor and garage storage works best when different types of items have different types of homes. Bulky, weather-exposed items go in the outdoor box or shed. Tools, smaller equipment and organised supplies go on shelving. Heavy workshop items go on all-steel boards. Active/daily items go on accessible lower shelves; seasonal or infrequently used items go high. When each thing has a specific home, the whole system stays organised rather than gradually collapsing back into chaos.

4. The Questions We Get Asked Most - Answered Honestly
For more FAQ's - read our full guide here.
|
Q: Do you ship to regional and rural Australia? |
|
A: Yes - we ship Australia-wide, including regional and rural areas. Delivery times are longer for remote locations, and for very large items like workshop sheds the logistics involve freight carriers rather than standard courier. On our product pages you'll see an estimated delivery time based on your postcode. If you're in a remote area and want a specific delivery estimate before ordering, message us and we'll give you an honest answer. |
|
Q: What happens if something arrives damaged? |
|
A: Contact us within 48 hours of delivery with photos of the damage. We sort it - replacement parts or full replacement depending on what's affected. Our 30-day return policy exists for exactly these situations. In over a year of operation, the significant majority of damage issues have been resolved within a week. We don't make customers fight for this; it's just what good service looks like. |
|
Q: How long does a garden shed actually last? |
|
A: It depends entirely on the quality of the shed, how it's installed, and the environment. Our honest breakdown: • Budget Giantz range (0.25mm colour board): 5-10 years in a sheltered suburban position with proper installation and occasional maintenance. Longer with care, shorter in coastal or exposed conditions. • Wallaroo range (23-gauge zinc-coated): 10-15 years in most Australian conditions. More durable than budget range, still not for coastal salt-air environments without additional care. • SpanBilt YardStore and UBild (high-tensile Australian steel, 15-year structural warranty): 20–30+ years when properly installed on a level foundation. The warranty exists because the manufacturer genuinely backs the product for the long term. • The biggest factors beyond the shed itself: a level, stable foundation and proper anchoring. A premium shed on a bad base will fail faster than a budget shed on a good one. |
|
Q: Can I move a shed once it's installed? |
|
A: Technically yes, but it's more work than most people expect. Sheds are assembled from panels rather than built as a single unit, which means they can be disassembled and reassembled. The challenge is that anchor bolts set in concrete are difficult to remove cleanly, and panels that have been assembled and weathered for a year or two can be harder to separate than fresh-from-the-box components. If there's any chance you'll want to relocate a shed within five years, discuss the foundation approach with us before pouring - there are anchoring options that are easier to reverse. |
|
Q: Why are some products shown as 'made to order' with a 2–4 day wait? |
|
A: The SpanBilt range - including the YardStore sheds, the Slimline F36-S, the UBild 260 workshop, and the Smartlocker — is manufactured in Brisbane once ordered rather than held as pre-built stock. This is how SpanBilt maintains Australian manufacturing - they build to order, which keeps production local and quality consistent. The 2–4 business day production window is before dispatch; total delivery time depends on your location. For metro areas, most customers receive SpanBilt products within 7–10 business days of ordering. Worth factoring in if you have a specific weekend planned for assembly. |
|
Q: What's the difference between a shed and the UBild 260 workshop building? |
|
A: This is a great question and the answer is genuinely significant. A garden shed is designed for storage - it keeps weather out and your belongings in, with a basic steel structure. The UBild 260 Portal Plus is a workshop building - it uses 80mm × 40mm portal steel framing, the same structural system used in garages and light commercial buildings, with 2.4m peak height, 8.8m² of floor space, and genuine capacity to be lined, insulated, wired for power and fitted out as a permanent room. You can put shelving and a workbench in a garden shed. You build a proper workshop in the UBild 260. They're genuinely different categories of product. |
|
Q: Do I need council approval for a garden shed? |
|
A: In most Australian residential situations, garden sheds under 10m² are classified as exempt development and don't require a building permit - provided they meet setback requirements from property boundaries (typically 1m from side and rear). Exceptions: strata/body corporate properties (owners corporation approval required regardless of size), heritage overlays, flood zones, bushfire attack level zones, and some council-specific rules. The UBild 260 at 8.8m² generally falls within the exempt threshold in most states, but always confirm with your local council before pouring a slab. We've published a full council permit guide on our blog. |
|
Q: What's the return process if I change my mind? |
|
A: 30-day returns - that's our policy. Contact us, we'll arrange return logistics, and we'll process your refund once the item is back. (We just need to make sure the product has not been assembled or used in anyway so we can resell it before returning). The exception is made-to-order SpanBilt products - because these are manufactured specifically for your order in Brisbane, returns are handled case by case. In practice, if the product arrives as described and undamaged, we work with customers to find a solution rather than simply refusing. If you have genuine concerns about fit before ordering a SpanBilt product, talk to us first - it's much easier to get the decision right before the order than to navigate a return after. |
5. What's New in the Range - and Why We Added It
We add products deliberately, not just to fill out a catalogue. Every new addition gets considered against a simple question: does this solve a problem that Australians genuinely have, and does it do it well? Here's what's recently joined the range and why it's there.
The Shed We've Been Waiting to Add
|
✨ NEW ARRIVAL 📏 SpanBilt Slimline Garden Shed - 1.07m × 2.1m Side Entry | F36-S The shed that goes where no other shed will fit. If you've ever measured the side of your house, found a 1.2m passage next to the fence, and resigned yourself to never having a shed - this is the product we added for you. At 1.07m wide with a side-entry door (not end-entry like most narrow sheds), it fits in spaces that have defeated every other option. Australian made by SpanBilt in Brisbane, 15-year warranty, wind rated to Region B/C. Four heritage colours. This is not a compromise shed - it's a purpose-engineered solution for apartment courtyards, townhouse gardens, side passages and any property where standard shed widths simply don't fit. Best for: Apartment courtyards, townhouse gardens, narrow side passages, units with small outdoor areas, anyone who's been told a shed 'won't fit' $749.95 → Shop Slimline Shed → |
The Workshop Building Category - Properly
|
✨ NEW ARRIVAL 🏗️ SpanBilt UBild 260 Portal Plus - Steel Workshop Building 2.6m × 3.4m We've sold workshop-capable sheds for a while. The UBild 260 is something different - it's an actual workshop building. The 80mm × 40mm portal steel frame is the same structural system used in garages and light commercial buildings, not the C-section framing of standard garden sheds. At 8.8m² with 2.4m gable peak height, 126cm wide door, and full capacity to be lined, insulated, and wired for power - this is a permanent room in your backyard, not a large garden shed. We added it because we kept hearing from customers who wanted more than a shed could offer. If you've been imagining a proper workshop, brewing setup, music room, photography studio, or man cave that's genuinely separate from the house - this is the product that makes that real. Best for: Serious hobby workshops, home brew setups, woodworking or metalworking studios, permanent man caves or she sheds, businesses needing a proper workspace on-site $3,449.95 → Shop UBild 260 → |
The Shelving Upgrade - All-Steel Boards
|
✨ NEW ARRIVAL 🔩 Giantz 2-Pack All-Steel Board Garage Shelving - 1.8m, 200kg Per Shelf Our standard shelving range uses steel frames with MDF shelf boards - which is the right choice for most home garage applications. But we kept hearing from customers doing heavier workshop use who wanted steel shelf surfaces rather than MDF. Mechanics storing parts bins, tradies with heavy automotive supplies, workshop builders who want the industrial look. This 2-pack uses all-steel shelf boards throughout, rated at 200kg per shelf, 1000kg per unit. It's the upgrade for serious workshop use - when you want shelf surfaces that can handle oil spills, heavy steel parts, and the kind of treatment that would eventually damage MDF surfaces. Best for: Tradies, mechanics, serious workshop owners, anyone storing heavy industrial-style loads or using shelving in a wet or oil-prone environment $239.95 → Shop All-Steel Shelving → |
The Outdoor Box That Actually Holds Everything
|
✨ NEW ARRIVAL 📦 Large Outdoor Storage Box 775L - Lockable Weatherproof Our most popular outdoor storage box has been the 490L. We added the 775L because customers kept asking what to do with the overflow - the bigger outdoor cushion sets, the full set of pool equipment, the camping gear, the bulk garden supplies. At 775 litres, this is a genuinely large box. Lockable, weatherproof, UV-stabilised for Australian sun exposure. It doubles as a bench seat. It's the option for customers who have a serious volume of outdoor storage needs and don't want to buy two boxes when one will do. Best for: Large outdoor furniture cushion sets, full pool equipment kits, bulk garden supplies, families with extensive outdoor toy collections, anyone who bought a smaller box and filled it immediately $259.95 → Shop 775L Storage Box → |
6. A Few Things About How We Run SmartStorage.au
We've been going for just over a year now and we've learned a lot about what customers genuinely want to know about us as a business - not just about the products. So here's the honest version.
We're genuinely a family business
SmartStorage.au launched in March 2025. It's run by a family, which means when you chat to us or call us, you're talking to someone who has a genuine personal stake in how this goes. We're not a reseller arm of a larger company. We buy stock, we hold opinions about quality, we've assembled products ourselves, and we care whether the experience is good.
Our pricing absorbs costs rather than passing them on
Australia's logistics costs have increased significantly over the past year. We've absorbed as much of that as we responsibly can rather than passing it on, because we think Australian families are already under enough financial pressure. Free shipping on orders over $50 is a real commitment, not a promotional gimmick. We review it regularly and we've kept it in place deliberately.
4.9 stars from 2,000+ reviews means something to us
That rating isn't marketing copy - it's a number we track carefully because it's the primary signal of whether we're doing this right. Every negative review gets read by the people who can actually fix what caused it. Every positive review tells us what's working. If you've bought from us and haven't left a review, we'd genuinely appreciate it - it helps other customers make confident decisions.
|
🤝 One thing we always say: If a product isn't right for your situation - we'll tell you. We've had conversations where we've talked someone out of a purchase because the product wasn't suited to their specific space or use case. We'd rather lose a sale and keep a customer than make a sale that leaves someone frustrated. That's not a marketing line. It's just how we think businesses should work. |
Still Have a Question We Haven't Answered?
This guide will grow as questions come in. If there's something you've been wondering that isn't here - ask us. The chat is live, it goes to real people, and we'll give you a real answer.
And if you're in the consideration phase - still deciding which product, still comparing options, still wondering if your space will work - that's exactly when you should reach out. We help people work through this every day. It's genuinely one of the parts of the job we enjoy most.

SmartStorage.au - Helping Australians Store Smarter Since 2025
